How to organize the Downloads folder on Mac
Sort Downloads by Date Added first, so the files you’re still using sit apart from the old backlog. Then move the backlog into a few broad folders you’ll actually keep using. Finder is enough for a one-time cleanup, and Mint can keep the folder in order after that.
Sorting Downloads in Finder
Most Downloads folders are a mix of installers, PDFs, images, archives and files you forgot you saved. You don’t need a detailed system for it. A handful of broad folders is much easier to keep up.
- Open Downloads in Finder, switch to List view and sort by Date Added.
- Make a Current folder and move the files you’re still working with into it.
- Create a few broad folders for the rest, such as Documents, Images, Archives and Installers.
- Open anything you don’t recognize before you move it, and make sure installers have finished.
- Repeat once a week, or set up a Shortcut for one simple rule like moving screenshots.
Keeping Downloads sorted with Mint
If Downloads fills up again within days, add it as a folder in Mint. Choose how to group it: by source (where the file came from), by type, by date or by topic. Mint shows the folders it plans to create and where each file will go, and nothing moves until you run it.
Run the first batch yourself and check the result. If it looks right, set Downloads to be organized daily at a time you choose, or pick As files arrive. With that setting, Mint waits until the folder has been quiet for a while, then moves each new file to where it belongs.
Every run is recorded for up to 90 days. If a batch ends up in the wrong place, Undo puts it back.
Things to check before you move files
Leave partial downloads alone while your browser or transfer app is still working on them. Before an installer or archive goes to the Trash, make sure the app is installed and the archive was fully extracted.
Organizing moves files into subfolders and never deletes them. Deleting is a separate step in Mint’s Disk tab, and you choose what goes.
