How to organize Desktop files on Mac
If you only want the Desktop to look tidy, turn on Stacks in Finder, which groups files without moving them. If you want the files somewhere else for good, move finished work into a few folders by hand, or let Mint preview a plan for the Desktop and run it when it looks right.
Stacks or folders
Stacks is the quick fix. Right-click the Desktop, choose Use Stacks, and files of the same kind collapse into one pile. The files stay in your Desktop folder, so nothing that points to them breaks. That also means the mess is still there when you open the Desktop folder in Finder or another app.
Moving files into folders changes where they actually live. It takes a bit more effort, and it’s the better choice once the Desktop has become a place where files sit for months.
Clearing the Desktop by hand
Work through it in this order and it goes quickly.
- Make an Active folder for what you’re working on this week.
- Make an Inbox folder for files that don’t have a home yet.
- Move finished work into Documents or the right project folder.
- Before deleting an alias, check that it’s a shortcut to a file that lives somewhere else.
- Take a few minutes each week to empty the Inbox folder.
Letting Mint keep it tidy
Mint helps when screenshots, exports and AirDrop files keep landing on the Desktop. Add the Desktop as a folder in Mint, choose a style (source, type, date or topic) and look at the preview before anything moves.
Start with manual runs. Once the plan looks right, you can switch the Desktop to daily organizing, or to As files arrive, where Mint moves each new file into place once the Desktop goes quiet. Files marked Needs Review in the Ignore List stay where they are until you decide, and every run can be undone from the journal.

iCloud and active projects
If your Desktop syncs with iCloud, moving files on this Mac changes the Desktop on your other devices too. Let iCloud finish syncing before you move a large batch.
Leave active project folders and anything you’re presenting or recording from on the Desktop until you’re done. Mint moves files and never deletes them, but a link or app that expects a file in its old place can lose track of it.

Do Finder Stacks move Desktop files?
No. Stacks only changes how the Desktop looks, and the files stay in the Desktop folder.
Can Mint keep screenshots off the Desktop?
Mint can sort screenshots inside a folder it manages, by source or type. If screenshots should always go to one place, you can also change where macOS saves them in the Options menu of the Screenshot app.
Does organizing the Desktop sync through iCloud?
Yes, if Desktop & Documents Folders is turned on in your iCloud settings. Check that sync is working before you move a lot of files.
