Why is System Data so large on Mac?
System Data gets large because macOS counts everything it can’t put in another category there. Most of the space usually comes from a few sources, such as app caches, developer files, virtual machine disks, old iPhone or iPad backups and Time Machine local snapshots. The number also shifts as macOS recalculates, so one high reading isn’t a reason to start deleting.
A category for everything else
System Settings has categories for apps, documents, photos and mail. Files that fit none of them land in System Data, including parts of macOS such as swap files and the Spotlight index, along with the data apps keep in your Library folder.
Some of that space can’t be opened by any app, even one with Full Disk Access. The Storage pane counts it anyway, which is one reason adding up folders in Finder never matches the total.
Where the space usually goes
If you write code, developer tools are a likely cause. Xcode build folders, iOS simulator runtimes, Homebrew and temporary build folders can all count as System Data, and they grow with every project.
Docker Desktop keeps one large disk file that grows as you pull images and doesn’t shrink when you prune them. iPhone and iPad backups made in Finder stay until you delete them, and browsers, creative apps and games keep big caches too.
Time Machine local snapshots can show up here as well. macOS counts their space as available and removes them when it needs room, so they’re rarely the first thing to deal with.
Why the number keeps changing
A restart clears temporary files and swap, and after an update Spotlight may be rebuilding its index. Caches fill back up as you use your apps. A reading taken before the Storage pane finishes calculating can also put space in the wrong category.
Finding the real cause
Get a reading you can trust, then tie it to something that happened on your Mac.
- Wait for System Settings > General > Storage to finish, then note the System Data size and your free space.
- Restart, use the Mac normally for a day and compare the numbers again.
- Think about what changed recently, such as a new Xcode version, Docker, an iPhone backup or an unfinished macOS update.
- Check the real size of each likely source in Finder or in its own app before deleting anything.

Is System Data the same as Other storage?
Mostly. Older versions of macOS called a similar catch-all category Other, and many articles still use that name.
Why did System Data change after a restart?
Restarting clears temporary files and swap, and caches, indexing and snapshots change during normal use too. The Storage pane also recalculates, which can move space between categories.
Can one app make System Data huge?
Yes. Xcode, Docker, virtual machines, creative apps, browsers and games can each keep very large caches or disk images.
